Tim, Peru is vividly exotic and to me, it feels like home. It has some major drawbacks and obstacles, but the weight of pros and cons is very subjective. The best thing is to go down there. Give yourself a month, or more if you can. If you want to live in the Andes, check out Cuzco and the Sacred Valley - Pisac and Urubamba specifically. Get out and network in the area you want to be in. Opportunity is there but you need to have some money in the bank... in case not! You can get by on $500/mo if rent is cheap or you can live on site for a project or job. Then you don't need to worry about cookware, linens or furniture. You wont become a millionaire down there, in fact you will spend more than you make unless you have a booming business. The entire country is depressed so most rely on tourism for work. If you're not independently wealthy already, you need to have a plan to sustain yourself. Work opportunities could be teaching english, hotels, shamanic tourism or something with resident aliens who are funding a project or business down there. You gotta make connections. And you must be able to speak basic spanish if you want to be taken seriously. If this is what you really want, jumping through the hoops is worth every ounce of effort- Peru is amazing! Keep in mind that residency isn't just handed over and takes 2 years of being employed then passing a history test in spanish, or you need $25,000 USD to get a business visa. Or you could marry a Peruana!! Despite the obstacles, I recommend living abroad to every human! Good luck Tim! Let me know if I can provide specifics.
